Progress Report: I Luvdisc You, Start to Finish

Progress Report: I Luvdisc You

Today’s Progress Report is one very close to my heart: a Pokemon cross stitch! A romantic Pokemon cross stitch, at that! While I love Pokemon, this was only my second time stitching a Pokemon-related piece. You can read about the first piece here: Friday Finishes #9: Wooper Love. This piece was also stitched for my boyfriend. I started it as a birthday gift but ended up finishing just in time for Christmas!

The chart is I Luvdisc You designed by Birdie Stitching. (I made some alterations to the lettering to fit my piece.) You can get the chart yourself here: Pokemon – I Luvdisc You.

If you can, go and give Birdie Stitching some love; she is an awesome designer of video game and pixel art-related charts and all of her charts are FREE.

New Year’s Stitching Resolutions, Year 4, 2016

New Year's Stitching Resolutions, Year 4, 2016

Here we are, about to ring in the New Year once again! Which means it’s time for my annual New Year’s stitching resolutions article. It’s the time of year to review my stitching goals from last year, and create my new list to move forward with in 2016.

If you would like to read last year’s article in its entirety, you can check it out here:

New Year’s Stitchy Resolutions, Year 3, 2015

Last Year’s Goals:

  1. Stitch More
  2. Finish 10 or more projects
  3. Complete a Rotation

Last Year’s Goals in Review

Last January I went for only three goals because 2014 was NOT my stitching year. I think I failed all but one of my goals from 2014. So I tried to go for small, manageable goals that I thought would be easy to complete in 2015. How did I do?

Well, I definitely stitched more – a lot more! Which I’m happy about. I still had a very long dry spell over the summer and fall, which was when I was working full time, but even with that I was still able to stitch on a lot of projects and even finished a bunch!

Which leads directly into the second goal – finish 10 or more projects. The last project I finished in 2014 was my Families Are Forever Photo Album (which I still need to do a Friday Finishes article on), so counting all my finishes from after that point, I finished… exactly 10 projects in 2015. This includes the 5 projects I stitched specifically for Christmas, so I just barely scraped by on that goal. But hey, I only finished 4 projects in all of 2014, so 10 is a big step up!

As for my rotation? Totally failed! I got about two months into my rotation projects (which you can see the first video of here: Mini Kit Rotation Series) before I lost pace and never went back to them. Rotations are apparently just not my thing. I’ve had a rotation goal on every single one of my stitching resolutions lists since I started making them in 2013, and I have failed that goal every year since. I think I’ve learned my lesson – no more rotation goals for me!

This Year’s Goals:

Finish 15 Projects

10 projects a year seems about my average for finished pieces. I did 10 in 2012, 10 in 2013, 4 in 2014 (let’s pretend that year didn’t happen), and now, 10 in 2015. I can definitely step it up more than that. As both an incentive to keep up my ‘stitching more’ progress and to boost my overall number of finished pieces, I want to finish at least 15 projects in 2016. No more, no less! I mean, more would be great, but I’m not going to push my luck.

Finish 3 or More UFOs

At this point in my stash-accumulating life, I have so many projects I’ve started and stopped. I’ve also taken in projects started by others so they wouldn’t end up in the trash, so my WIP/UFO box is almost full! To the point where I’ve had to separate out projects I’m actively stitching on from projects that are kitted up or started or half-finished, or else there would be no room. I want to turn some of those UFOs into FFOs! That way, I can make way for more stash. (I am shameless, give me the stash!)

Start A Large Project

This one is moving outside my comfort zone, but if I don’t go outside it, I will never learn or grow! Everyone who knows me knows I hate large projects. Anything over 5×7 is almost unmanageable for me. In 2016 that is going to change! I am going to start one of the many large projects I have in my stash. I won’t finish – so I’m not going to make that the goal – but gathering the courage and plunging into a project that would otherwise seem overwhelming to me is a great way to push my boundaries in 2016.

Finish The Owl Pillowcases!

This piece has frustrated me for too many years and I’m sick of it! I started these Stamped Owl Pillowcases for my sister several years ago… now so long I’ve forgotten the exact year. This year, I attempted to finish them for Christmas. And I completed failed, to the point where I took them off the gift list. These pillowcases drive me nuts, but I’m not going to give up and toss them, I’m going to finish these suckers so I can finally be rid of them! Wish me luck, because I’ll need it.

Four stitching goals this year! One more than last year, and slightly more ambitious. Now that I know I can push through the lack of motivation and get stitching done, I want to up my game and see what I can complete in 2016. 2015 was a good year – let’s see if 2016 will be better!

What are you looking to accomplish with your stitching in 2016?

Christmas 2015 – Projects Update!

Christmas 2015 Projects

It is December 13th, and we are now 12 days from Christmas! On November 2nd I posted an article called Planning For Christmas, where I went over the 14 Christmas projects I organized as gifts for this year. I started very late because I didn’t actually plan on making any Christmas gifts this year. My usual track record is to finish less than half the Christmas presents I start out making.

So! Now that we are 12 days from Christmas, where am I at on my progress?

This is what I started with:

My Christmas projects! Wish me luck!

My Christmas projects! Wish me luck!

  1. Owl By Janlynn
  2. Mothers Are Special by Janlynn
  3. Rock The ‘Stache by Bucilla
  4. Tractor by Janlynn
  5. Home Is Where Your Mom Is by Bucilla
  6. Owl Pillowcases by Janlynn
  7. Home Sweet Home Code by Happy Stitch
  8. HTML Welcome Sign By Happy Stitch
  9. Stop Hatin, Start Bakin by Daily Cross Stitch
  10. Baby Panda by Daily Cross Stitch
  11. Oh Deer by Daily Cross Stitch
  12. Deer Silhouette by Daily Cross Stitch
  13. Keep Calm And Game On by Daily Cross Stitch
  14. Stark Bookmark by Black Lupin (not pictured)

Wow, what a list! Considering last year I decided to stitch four projects and only finished two, this was quite an undertaking! Especially because I started so late. I fully expected that I wouldn’t finish half the list, so I planned two projects for each person I decided to make gifts for; if I could finish one for each, I would be happy.

Here is the list so far!

  1. Owl By Janlynn: Finished!
  2. Mothers Are Special by Janlynn: Finished!
  3. Rock The ‘Stache by Bucilla: Finished!
  4. Tractor by Janlynn: Finished!
  5. Home Is Where Your Mom Is by Bucilla: Started!
  6. Owl Pillowcases by Janlynn: Abandoned 🙁
  7. Home Sweet Home Code by Happy Stitch: Finished!
  8. – 14. Not Started

So I’ve finished 5 of the 14 projects as of today. I have #6 and #7 started – except I gave up on the pillowcases again this year. Stamped cross stitch just takes me too long, and I’ll run out of steam and not start any of the others unless I give it up and move on. I have projects #8 and #9 kitted up and ready to start, but I haven’t started them, nor any of the others on the list.

This is my finished pile, to be washed and framed:

This includes non-Christmas projects as well, I have a lot that need washed and frame!

Aaaand this is my pile of Christmas projects that I still need to finish:

It's a big pile...

It’s a big pile…

12 days to Christmas and I have 8 projects left to finish by December 20th, at the very latest. I doubt I can do it. But hey, I got a lot more done than I’ve gotten done in years past, so even if I don’t finish them all, I’m proud of myself! But wish me luck anyway, I’ll need it if I want to finish.

Planning For Christmas

RCart22

Halloween is two days gone, and every crafter knows what that means: you should be halfway finished with all your Christmas presents you’re making right now! Unless you’re me. Then you always wait until November 1st to start planning who will get what, and then have a small panic when you realize you are a terribly slow stitcher and will never get finished in time.

Every year is the same: I tell myself I want to get a head start on my projects for Christmas, then I wait until November to get started. Come December 20th I’m always scrambling to finish. I owe a lot of people IOUs from previous Christmases. (They usually become birthday presents instead.)

This year is no different! Actually, it is a little different… I wasn’t originally going to stitch my Christmas presents this year as I have in years past. I haven’t picked up my needle in months (if the lack of articles on the blog over the last few months is any indication), and I was generally feeling down about my craftiness and whether I even wanted to make the effort this year when I knew I wouldn’t get it done.

Then I told myself, “You can do this! Everyone loves your gifts. So what if it’s November and everyone knows you won’t finish in time? At least you do finish them and give them out in the end!”

So here I am, spending today sorting through my stash and picking out projects. I even bought new charts! I’ve been on a stash diet for months now until my stitching bug came back. It feels like today was the day to splurge. I can almost guarantee I don’t have any of the colors I need for any of these new charts, because I never have the colors I need when I need them, but that means a shopping trip and more goodies for me!

The past two years I’ve only managed to complete 2 of my projects on time… this year, I’ll have 14. Some of them are back ups in case I run out of time and need something quicker to stitch, but I’ve been careful to keep all the projects under 7 inches. And you’ll notice the mini kits in here:

My Christmas projects! Wish me luck!

My Christmas projects! Wish me luck!

Some of them I’ve already started. Some I have to kit up still. But after all my planning today I feel like my stitching bug is finally back. I’m ready to pick up the needle again. I’m ready for Christmas!

What are your plans for the holidays? Got projects you need to finish?

Random Corner: 2015 Projects List!

Here is my project list for 2015! Eight projects I am intent on finishing by the end of the year, plus Little Princess (which I finished January 2nd) and Artiste’s Snail. That will put me over my resolution of 10 finished pieces by the end of the year and I will only add on to that number! This year will be the year of finished cross-stitch pieces. 🙂

New Year’s Stitchy Resolutions, Year 3, 2015

RCart4

Well folks, the time of year is here again. The New Year is upon us all, and that means it’s time for a review of last year’s stitching resolutions and to create a new list for 2015. If you would like to read last year’s article in its entirety, you can check it out here:

New Year’s Stitchy Resolutions, Year 2, 2014

Last Year’s Goals:

  1. Complete My UFOs
  2. Complete My Mother’s UFOs
  3. Complete the Remaining Christmas Presents
  4. Complete a Large Project
  5. Do a Bear-Themed Rotation

Last Year’s Goals in Review

So, how did I do with my stitchy resolutions in 2014? In 2013, I completed two goals, modified one goal, and dropped the remaining two, and I completed ten projects. It wasn’t the best track record but I had high hopes for 2014.

All I can say after looking at this list is that I failed all my 2014 goals! I did not complete a single one of my own UFOs, I finished one of my mother’s UFOs, I did not end up finishing either of last year’s Christmas presents (I even decided not to give one of them at all and start over with something new), nor did I finish a large project or do a bear-themed rotation this year. And in total? I completed four projects in the entirety of 2014. They were all under 5 x 7, so by my book, they were all mini kits.

I’m not discouraged! All that means is my interests throughout the year changed course. I didn’t get in nearly as much stitching time as I went back to school and worked two jobs, and I had more fun working on new projects than old ones.

With all that in mind, here is my New Year’s Resolutions List for 2015:

This Year’s Goals:

Stitch More

Take more time to stitch! My issue with cross-stitch is that I have about a dozen other hobbies all vying for my attention. I’ll have the bug, but not the motivation to pick up a needle when I should do something else. Now that I’m off work and out of school, I want to organize my time better so I can balance responsibilities, hobbies, and cross-stitch to do more of the thing I love the most!

Finish 10 or More Projects

When I sat down at the end of the year to examine my stitching progress, I shocked myself by only counting four finished pieces for the entirety of the year! I finished ten projects (of all different sizes) in 2013 and maybe ten or so in 2012 as well. Considering how many mini-kits I have in my set of drawers I should have been able to finish many more. In any case, even if they aren’t necessarily current WIPs or UFOs, I hope to finish 10 or more projects in 2015. Whether they’re my UFOs or WIPs, my mother’s UFOs, or brand new projects, I’ll count anything stitched towards the running total. The more things I finish, the better!

Complete a Rotation

I tried a Cat-Themed Rotation in 2013, and it failed miserably. I get so bored working on big projects that I’ll go start something new instead of working on something old. So, one of my goals for 2015 will be to complete a Rotation! It’ll keep me from getting bored with any one particular project and, if I follow through and finish them, those are finished pieces to add to my finish pile. I don’t know what kind of Rotation yet, but I will have one. We’ll just have to see whether it fizzles out in the end.

This year I think I will stick with just these three goals. They’re simple, they promote stitching, and I think they are all goals I can easily keep. The New Year fills me with so much excitement! I can’t wait to discover what the year has in store and get stitching on new projects. Here’s to 2015, and we’ll revisit this list again in another year!

What are you looking to accomplish with your stitching in 2015?
