Friday Finishes #38: Owl By Janlynn
Today’s Friday Finish is a mini kit I stitched for my sister for Christmas. This one has the unique honor of being the first to have the colors bleed on me in a very long time!
Name of Piece: #021-1484 Owl
Designed by: No designer listed!
Chart or Kit?: Mini Kit
Distributed as a kit by Janlynn under their “Counted Cross Stitch” series.
Kit Contains: 18-ct cotton Aida fabric, 6-strand cotton floss, frame, self-adhesive mounting board, needle, graph, instructions
Finished Size: 2.5 inches round
The Story: This particular owl design is popular with Janlynn. I think I have the same design on two other kits they make: the Owl Pillowcases and a larger 5 x 7 kit I haven’t started. My sister loves owls, so every time I see a kit like this one, I pick one up for her. I needed a mini kit I hoped I could finish in time for Christmas to give to her as a present, so I picked this one!

Time To Complete: Total stitch time, a few hours. It only took me two days to stitch in total.
Review: So the glaringly obvious thing with this piece: the color bled when I washed it! I can’t even remember the last time colors bled when I washed a piece, and I wash all my finishes before I frame them. I wash them in ice cold water and specially designed needlework washing liquid. Imagine my surprise when I lifted the towel to see how dry it was and the colors had bled everywhere!
It wouldn’t have been so bad if it hadn’t bled so much… but on the other hand, the fact the color ran as much as it did actually helped in the end. It looks almost like the fabric was purposefully dyed to look that way. Plus it wasn’t like my sister minded! Lesson learned: sometimes, no matter what you do, the colors will run!
Other than that, this piece was a relatively quick and easy stitch. The fractionals didn’t even give me much trouble!
The Finished Piece:
Final Verdict: This piece was a quick and easy stitch. The count is small, so I wouldn’t recommend for beginners, but other than that this is a nice piece. Be warned: the colors in your mini kit may run when washed!

Friday Finishes is a segment where I catalog and review all the cross-stitch pieces I have ever completed. Some of the pieces I no longer have information on, or I don’t have pictures because I gave away the piece as a gift and forgot to take a picture, but I’ll do my best to be as informative as possible! Check back on Fridays for more.
