Friday Finishes #12: Buzzing Bumblebee

The finished piece!

Buzzing Bumblebee

Today’s Friday Finishes is one that I didn’t like too much when I bought it, but fell in love once it was finished!

Name of Piece: Item #021-1389 What’s The Buzz (Buzzing Bumblebee)

Designed by: I don’t know why I still have this on here because none of these kits list the designer.

Distributed as a kit by Janlynn Company under their Design for the Needle series.

Kit Contains: 18-count cotton Aida, 6 strands floss, frame, self-adhesive mounting board, frame, needle, graph, instructions

Finished Size: 2.5 inches round

The Story: When I went to Hobby Lobby and picked up Love Bug 2012, I picked up four other small kits at the same time. I nicknamed these kits my Mini Kit series, because I intended to get these all done before starting any new projects. This kit became second in line. When I picked it up I didn’t like it very much! The cover art on the kit didn’t do the colors justice, and up until I was about half-way through the kit I considered replacing a lot of the colors with my own. However, after stitching it this kit became one of my favorites! I originally wanted to make it and then give it away as a gift, but after I was done I had to keep it.

Time To Complete: Around 3 days I think?

Review: So my biggest problem with this kit was the wings on the bumblebee. And by extension the back-stitch on the word and the bee line beside it. I really didn’t like the idea of the ‘very light violet’ on the wings combined with that light blue. I thought both would be hard to see on the finished product and it wouldn’t look very good. I figured I could either increase the strands from one to two on the back-stitch and replace the ‘very light violet’ (which looks grey to me), or replace both colors all together.

But, when I got that far, I decided to give the thread a shot. The very light violet was still sketchy but once I started to put in the light blue I fell in love with the colors. I was very surprised! From buying the kit to all the time I had it to throughout stitching it, I didn’t like or trust the color choice, so getting all the way to that point and then suddenly changing my mind was very surprising! But I truly do like the color choice now.

I feel that the picture doesn’t do the colors justice. It’s one of those things that looks much better in person than in a photo. But I definitely came to enjoy this piece immensely and I have it hanging on my cork board with the rest of the Mini Kits Series!

Final Verdict: If you like stitching bumblebees, go for it! It’s a very fun kit and it’s small so it’ll make for a super quick finish. I didn’t like it at first but now I love it!

Have you done this kit before? How did it go for you? How did you like it, or not like it, as the case may be?  Leave a comment below or head on over to our Facebook page and tell us how it went!

Friday Finishes is a segment where I catalog and review all the cross-stitch pieces I have ever completed. Some of the pieces I no longer have information on, or I don’t have pictures because I gave away the piece as a gift and forgot to take a picture, but I’ll do my best to be as informative as possible! Check back on Fridays for more.
