Friday Finishes #7: Friends Indeed

This week’s Friday Finishes is the second gift I ever stitched for someone! (The first being the Dolphin piece I made for my sister.)

Kit Contains: 18 ct. aida, embroidery floss, needle, embossed card, envelope, backing card, and complete instructions.

Finished Size: 4 in. by 6 in.

The Story: So, this kit is the first of many that I picked up on my first trip to Hobby Lobby. My best friend’s birthday was coming up, and as it was my first time in Hobby Lobby I was determined to walk out with plenty of cross-stitch kits, charts, and supplies, since I didn’t know when I’d ever make it back to Hobby Lobby. While I was perusing their kits I came across several kits for making cross-stitch cards! And I thought it’d make a good card/present combination. I didn’t have long until her birthday, though, so I had to work pretty quickly once I got the kit and took it home.

Time To Complete: 3 days, several hours a day.

Review: My biggest disappointment in this wasn’t the cross-stitch, but the card itself. It had a pretty edged border around the oval for the piece, but the entire card was a flat, plain white. It was really hard to see the border even with it raised off the card. So I tried to add a little bit of color to it, a blue and orange to match the blue and orange in the piece, but me coloring and drawing around the emboss wasn’t very good. I think they made the cards a solid white so it wouldn’t take away from the cross-stitch, but I personally didn’t like it.

The piece itself wasn’t difficult at all, and I quite enjoyed doing it. I only had three days to get this present done, so I stitched very quickly and made a few mistakes, but they aren’t major or noticeable. I vaguely remember running out of the dark blue for back-stitch… or maybe I had made a mistake and I had to frog it and lost the thread. Either way I think I was short and that’s why the back-stitch is skimped on in a few places.

Final Verdict: My friend was very happy with her card! I did enjoy doing this kit, even though I think, if I had to do it again, that I’d make my own card to use instead of the one it comes with. I really didn’t like the plain white on this card.
